Keep in mind that I’ve been cycling for at least 32 years, but only following some version of the Paleo diet for about the last two. I have a keen interest in sports nutrition and healthy living, but am no means a nutritional expert. In my day job as a university professor, I lecture on human rights and conflict dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa. Please keep that in mind before e-mailing to ask me for dietary advice!
Happy trails!

Dustin,
I’m from south orange county and a fellow rough rider. I would have loved to do a ride like this. If you have any others planned in the future can I possibly get on a list?
I have thoughts of someday organizing a rough rider ride that goes up and over the santa ana mountains sometime. Maybe a desert to the sea type of ride.
Hope to hear from you.
Thanks
Frank

Hey Frank,
Good to hear from you. I’d love to hook up with you at some point for some SoCal rough riding. For where I live in east county San Diego, summer and early fall tends to be a bit hot for the best mixed-surface exploring, so how much rough riding I do depends a bit on how lucky we are with the weather. What kind of mileage/amount of climbing do you tend to do?
Have you done any of the rides with the SoCal Rivendell Bicycle Appreciation society?

Most of them tend to be mixed surface. They are definitely on the social end of the intensity spectrum, which drives some guys crazy, but they can be fun. There are plans in the works for rides in the fall, including one in the Santa Anas to Santiago Peak.
Best regards,
Dustin

I’m not sure how you manage to work with them. I was about one smart-ass comment away from getting a strip search.
